Dream On
Sometimes, the highway through her boyfriend’s mind leads Ramona to places that he once visited in his dreams. Thus, she finds herself walking across the grounds of an imposing stone mansion alongside a curly-haired girl who has introduced herself as Kitty Pryde and asks almost immediately, “Are you one of the X-Men?”
Ramona hesitates. “I’m visiting,” she says truthfully. “How long have you been here?”
“A couple of months so far!” Kitty bubbles. “At first I thought that it would be weird, living in a house with all of these grown-ups, but none of them have treated us like we’re stupid kids, and I’ve always gotten along pretty well with my teachers, anyway.” She pauses for breath. “Is that your real hair, by the way? I love it.”
“Thanks, and no.” Ramona’s hair is purple with pink bangs this week. “It’s all dye.”
Kitty gives a sheepish little grin. “Sorry. I guess I wasn’t sure, living here and everything.”
“No problem,” Ramona assures her.
“So, who are you visiting?”
“Do you know a kid named Scott Pilgrim?”
“Sure. Everybody here likes Scott.” Kitty wrinkles her nose. “I’m kind of jealous of him, though. I mean, I still phase through the ceiling sometimes if I have nightmares. He’s probably about my age, and he already has almost perfect control over his powers. I bet that the Professor would like to start sending him out on missions, but –“
“Don’t tell me,” Ramona interrupts. “Let me guess. He'd rather hang around and play his bass.”
“Sometimes I think so,” Kitty says. “He probably wouldn’t say no to a really tough fight if one came his way, but right now he’s more interested in turning his music into light shows. That’s his mutant ability, by the way – maybe you already knew that?”
Ramona would have bet on super-speed or flight, but she can’t quite contain her amusement. Even in his own little self-insert fan fiction, in which he is loved and respected by a team of superheroes and has superhuman powers himself, Scott is still Scott, doing what he already loves to do, only with flashier side effects. She hasn't read enough X-Men comics to figure out if he borrowed them from an existing character. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a chance one of these days,” she says softly. “For a really tough fight, I mean.” She isn’t sure whether thinking too hard about Gideon will summon him – this isn’t her head, after all – but she doesn’t want to take any chances. “Look, you don’t need to be jealous of Scott or anybody else. I think that you’re going to do plenty of amazing things, too.” She wishes that she could believe in the truth of her own words, that the thirteen-year-old girl beside her – the version of Kitty Pryde that lives in a fanboy’s head – will have the chance to be more than just a fragment of someone else’s daydream, trapped in one place and one identity forever. Maybe she will. Stranger things have happened, after all.
“Thanks!” Kitty beams. “Do you want to go and find Scott?”
“I’ll catch up with him later.” Hopefully, when she does, it will be in the waking world. Ramona doesn’t have anything against this one, but she and Scott have places to go, jobs to keep, vengeful martial artists to fight, and demons to conquer. She can understand why he – why anybody – might want to escape sometimes into a comic book adventure, but for now, at least, she’s too busy living in one.
