Summary: Elsa has almost everything she could want for her birthday.

A Day For Wishing
On Elsa’s tenth birthday, her favorite gift is a dress of blue velvet, the color of the sky before the stars appear. She twirls in circles, watching the skirt swirl around her, laughing until her breath comes out in puffs of frost. This stops her, and she curtsies before her parents. “Thank you.”
Her mother leans in to kiss her forehead - as she used to do to Elsa and her sister before they went to sleep – but then stops. “You’re welcome, darling. You look beautiful.”
Elsa tugs at her gloves. “I wish –“ That Anna could be here to celebrate with us. That I could let her try on my dress and feed her cake and hug her, without hurting her again.
Her father wags a finger. “Your birthday wishes won’t come true if you speak them aloud.”
She nods, even though this one won’t come true anyway.
Later, she falls asleep with a belly full of chocolate fudge cake and the dress hanging off the door to her wardrobe so she can look at it first thing in the morning.
Just after sunrise, she wakes to find a folded piece of paper by her door, as if much smaller hands than hers slid it into the room and then tiptoed away. The penmanship is shaky and splotched with ink, but the message is clear. Elsa presses it to her chest for a moment, and then places it in the wardrobe where she won’t have to look at it again.
